Teacher Beth Ann Chester Sentenced for Having Sex with 14-Year-Old

Moon Area High School (Moon Township, Pennsylvania) health and gym teacher Beth Ann Chester was arrested in January on charges stemming from sexual encounters with a 14-year-old male student at the high school where she taught 9th grade and coached the girls volleyball team. Chester, 27, was sentenced to 1 and one-half to 3 years in jail with an additional five years of probation in a plea deal. The original 11 charges against her would have sent her away for 22 years. Beth Ann Chester resigned from her teaching position in December, 2007, after the male student's parents confronted her in a coffee shop and asked that she resign. The parents had discovered lewd messages and nude pictures of the teacher on their son's cell phone. Chester's lawyer said that the family was reluctant to involve police in the matter, but, when Chester confided in a colleague at work her reasons for resigning, the colleague reported her to district officials and the police were summoned in early January. Deputy District Attorney Laura Ditka stated that the student's parents were agreeable to a light sentence until they discovered that Chester had contacted their son again in March after she had been arrested and told to stay away from the boy. A judge subsequently placed her under house arrest.As part of her sentencing, Beth Ann Chester is not allowed to have contact with the student, own a cell phone or have Internet access. She will also not be allowed to teach, having given up her teacher's certification.The male student initially told authorities that he had not had sexual relations with the teacher. But Beth Ann Chester, who was married, admitted to having sex with the boy on numerous occasions, including in the school parking lot. Chester's husband filed for divorce in February. Chester's lawyer, Robert del Greco, said, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, "I think Beth Ann associated and looked to her students as her peer group and because of the age discrepancy the sex acts were a crime. I'm not saying it's right, but I think that was her mindset.
